Book

Dust Jackets

Rating of
the book and dust jacket will be performed separately and the results
of the grading will be shown with the book rating being placed to the
left of the slash and the dust Jacket grading being placed to the right
of the slash.

As
New
|
To be used
only when the book is in the same immaculate condition to which it was
published. There can be no defects, no missing pages, no library
stamps, etc., and the dust jacket (if it was issued with one) must be
perfect, without any tears.

Fine
|
Approaches
the condition of As New, but without being crisp. For the use of the
term Fine, there must also be no defects, etc., and if the jacket has a
small tear, or other defect, or looks worn, this should be noted.
|
Very
Good
|
Describes a
book that does show some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either
binding or paper. Any defects must be noted.
|
Good
|
Describes
the average used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any
defects must be noted.
|
Fair
|
Worn book
that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but
may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. (which must be noted). Binding,
jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects must be noted.

Poor
|
Describes
a
book that is sufficiently worn, to the point that its only merit is as
a Reading Copy because it does have the complete text, which must be
legible. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. This copy
may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints,
hinges, pages, etc.

Dust
Jacket
|
In all cases, the lack
of a dust jacket should be noted if the book was issued with one.

Actual
Quality
|
When
in doubt, describe the book exactly as it is, as to physical condition,
textual reading, and edition.
|
Inscribed
|
Written
inscription(s) on the physical book, book pages or dust jacket.
|
Signed
|
A
signature placed on the book itself or on an attached bookplate.
|
Bookplate
|
A
book owner's identification label that is usually pasted within a book .
|
Presidential
Bookplate
|
This
is a bookplate that depicts the Great Presidential Seal and that
represents that the signer placed his/her signature upon the bookplate
while actually in office.

Presidential
Library Bookplate
|
This
is a bookplate that usually has a unique graphical
depiction or wordage denoting issuance from a Presidential
Library.

Presidential
Private Bookplate
|
This
is a bookplate that is from the private desk or personal library of the
presidential signer.

Ex-library
|
Copies
must always be noted as such no matter what the condition of
the book. Had at one point been a library book. Usually has
signs identifying it as a library book.

Ex-Libris
|
Had
at one time been part of private library collection. Usually has signs
identifying it as a private library book.
|
Book
Club BCE
|
Editions
must always be noted as such no matter what the condition of
the book. Published and sold through a book club such as
Doubleday or Book of the Month Club.

Remainder
Mark
|
A
marking made by the publisher or book dealer on the top or bottom of
the leaves; all instances of remainder marks must be disclosed.
|
ARC
|
Advance
Review Copy is a special edition of a new book sent to bookstores and
reviewers by publishers. These usually are in soft
cover bindings with a draft of the dust jacket (informally known as
wraps). They are produced before the First Edition is printed
They are considered to be draft copies of
book. ARC are collectible but they are not First Editions.
